Environmental Science Mind Map
Grade level: 8th and 9th graders
Language objectives:
- Students will be able to practice and use the grammar
structure of present tense
- Students will organize facts about the state of the
environment in an online mind map
- Students will select facts and ideas about climate
change
Content objectives:
- Students will be able to include facts about climate
change in their online mind map
- Students will be able to define what the possible
consequences of climate change can be
The activities cover at least two competence
aims after year 10:
- Understand and use a general vocabulary related to different topics
- Select different digital resources and other aids and use them in an independent manner in own language learning(Udir, 2016)
This is an understanding activity with the power
words select, define and organize. The technology used in the activity is
called bubbl.us, which is an online way to make a mind map. The benefit of
using an online mind map is that it makes it easier to edit the boxes and move
them around, and it does not need as much planning as a physical mind map does.
When the students can edit the map faster without having to stop and plan,
their mindset continues.
Into:
In the into-activity the students will go
online to NASA’s web page about global climate change. Here they will have some
time to just explore the web page and look at thing they find interesting. This
will hopefully make them more curious about the topic.
Through:
In the through activity the students will have a
short introduction to the mind mapping tool; Bubbl.us. They will learn how to
make a mind map online, so that they know how to do it in the beyond-activity.
Beyond:
This is when the students will be asked to
select facts that they find interesting and important to be able to explain why
climate change is happening. The students will organize the facts they found
interesting in their mind map, and give reason for the problem.
The teacher can easily check if the students
have met the objectives by letting the students hand in the web address of
their mind map either as an email or on Itslearning. This is a great way for
the teacher to see how the students think and organize their thoughts.
